Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to carry out a suicide prevention program targeting Air Force soldiers and to prepare a plan which would prevent suicidal tendencies in advance. The suicide prevention program was applied to the soldiers who were deemed be showing suicidal signs. The participants were assessed before and after the program against a number of factors. The results were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of the program. Policy recommendations were then based on the conclusions of the analysis.

Method: The experimental period for the research was about 16 weeks from Oct. 9, 2009 to Jan. 22, 2010. The statistical processing of collected data included frequency analysis and paired t-test using SPSS 12.0 for Windows Statistical Package Program.

Results: First, in the measurement of stress coping methods, active coping measured 3.11 points prior to the program, and improved to 3.17 points after the program. Passive coping measured 2.07 points prior the program process, and decreased to 2.00 points after the program. Second, problem-solving confidence, approach-evasion disposition, and self-control difficulty measured 3.86, 2.27, 2.49, respectively, before the program, and they scored 3.94, 2.21, 2.39 afterwards. Third, depression measured 2.94 points before the program, but only 2.52 points afterwards. Fourth, suicidal thinking measured 0.63 points prior to the program, and dropped to 0.50 points after the program.

Conclusion: The suicide awareness program resulted in the decrease in the number of Air Force Soldiers in depression and the increase in their problem-solving ability. After the program, many felt their quality of lives have been enhanced, substantiating the need to continue this program.
